Stock Market For Beginners

First Steps into the Stock Market for Beginners

Despite all the rules, regulations, and general hype about investing in stocks, a reassuring bit of advice venturing into the world of the stock market for beginners is that the basis of buying and selling shares on the market is to enable you to become a part owner of public companies along with hundreds and thousands of other investors. That is the very basic rule you need to understand; all the rest of the gyrations come from the stock market itself.

A good point for stock market for beginners to understand is that the market is, in its own way, alive. It grows, shrinks, and evolves. But, while for the most part, the fluctuations of the stock market come from the solidity of the company's performance, outside forces affect the performance of the stock market as well. Perception is one of the keys in driving up the prices and keeping them there. So, what should you do when entering the hairy world of the stock market for beginners?

First move in a stock market for beginners, choose a licensed stockbroker that you can trust. Much like looking for a good doctor, rely on company reviews for brokerage houses as well as word-of-mouth reviews. This is the person you will be entrusting your hard-earned money to, right? You could choose a broker that speaks to you over the phone or one that contacts you online.

Next, join a pooled fund (mutual funds) that pools your money together with other investors. This allows your broker to invest in a stock mix that will balance out your risks.

None of this is free, however. There are commissions that you pay your broker whenever you buy or sell stocks, a fund fee for becoming part of the mutual fund, and a documentary stamp tax for the legal paperwork involved.

A good rule of thumb in the stock market for beginners is to invest only as much money as you can comfortably lose. We've all heard fantastic stories about how someone invested their last few thousand dollars into the market and made millions. While these stories may be true, these are extreme examples and are usually flukes.

You can easily lose money as gain it but these are driven by market forces more than anything else. Invest the minimum at first, and then add to your portfolio as you become more familiar with the market. That's why a mutual fund is a great idea – your money is spread out and there is less chance of losing big as compared to sinking all your money into one corporation.

Last, you make more money with long-term investments in a stock market for beginners. While you can short-sell your stocks (buying and selling stocks before they are registered to you or before you've paid for them, usually within an hour, or the day) when that can actually make you spend more with taxes, fees, and such, not to mention the fact that it's now considered illegal? Long term investments help you spread out your expenses, pay less on taxes, and generally make more than nervous investors can.
